There are a few prints throughout history that just do not lose their charm. Stripes, paisley, gingham checks, florals…and polka dots. But did you know polka dots weren’t always a favorite? In medieval times, dotted patterns were extremely taboo because they resembled rashes caused by smallpox, the Bubonic plague and leprosy. The more you know!
But, not to be down for the count, polka dots came back strong in the 1940’s, especially after Frank Sinatra’s song, “Polka Dots and Moonbeams,” came out and then again in the 1960’s with the “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.” When you think about polka dots, I’m sure you think of hoop skirts and Lucille Ball, but they have graced the walkways of the likes of Carolina Herrera and Christian Dior.

Personally, when I think of iconic polka dot moments I think of Julia Roberts stomping divots at the polo game on Pretty Woman and Doris Day sloshing back martinis in Do Not Disturb. Polka dots are always a classic that, with one print, conveys an air of effortless style that is forever chic. It’s sophisticated and timeless and it deserves a spot in your wardrobe this summer!
